With family — Four of us in one car — two adults and two kids, one of them six. The six-year-old asked how far was left roughly every forty minutes.

Good signal — 5G all the way to Satara. Download the offline map anyway — the ghats further south eat it.

Three and a half hours down NH48 and the obvious place to break. Misal, a leg-stretch, and the last easy petrol pump before the turn inland.
Good signal — 4G across the city, and a pump every few kilometres along the highway.

Dandeli

Off the highway into teak forest on the Kali river, at the edge of the sanctuary. The point where the drive stopped feeling like a drive.
Patchy signal — A bar or two at the camp, nothing inside the forest. The camp office has a landline, and that is the whole plan.

Gokarna

Temple town at the top, a beach down every path off it. Four nights, which turned out to be exactly the right number.
Good signal — 4G across the town and Kudle. It thins the moment you walk south over the headland.

Twenty minutes in an open boat instead of an hour over the headland, which is the correct call with a six-year-old.
Patchy signal — A bar on the sand at the north end, and none at all out on the water.

Rooms behind the dunes, most cooking their own fish thali. Ask for the sea-facing side and expect nothing fancy.
Getting around

NH48 south is four-lane and quick. The Konkan stretch of NH66 is slower, prettier and full of trucks. The driving times on the map come from a routing engine: add a third for traffic, animals and lunch.
Fuel and tolls
FASTag is effectively compulsory on NH48. Top up before leaving; a dead tag at a barrier costs double and a great deal of goodwill.
Ghat sections
The Dandeli approach and the drop to the coast are single-lane in places, unlit, and shared with trucks. Do them in daylight, with no exceptions.

Open boats run between the main beach, Kudle and Om Beach for a few hundred rupees a head. Faster than the headland path and much easier with children.

The story
Fourteen hours in one go, once, before the children. Never again. So we broke it: a night in the forest going down, the Konkan coast coming back.
Dandeli earns its place
- Just over 400 km from Pune, off the highway into teak along the Kali river. Splits an unreasonable drive into two reasonable ones.
- The safari is not East Africa: hornbills, langurs, spotted deer, maybe an elephant a long way ahead.
- What you are buying is two hours in a forest at first light with the engine off.
- The coracle beat the jeep. The six-year-old calls it the best boat in the world.
Four nights in Gokarna, not two
- Sleep in the town if you came by car. The huts are lovely and down a footpath nobody carries a suitcase along.
- Boat to Om Beach, not the headland walk: twenty minutes instead of an hour.
- Kudle in the morning, temple street at dusk. Midday is for lying down indoors.
- The last week of December is peak. Book ahead.
Four nights in one place, after two days of driving, is the whole trick. Anything less and the beach is just another stop.

Home the long way
- Tarkarli is the fish: surmai, a pomfret, solkadhi, rice bhakri, and a coconut curry that took the top of my head off.
- One night was not enough. Next time, a night off Gokarna and give it to the coast.
- The last day is simply long — out at six, over the ghat, home mid-afternoon with a car full of sand.
Seven days, four of us and one car: a night on the Kali river, four on Gokarna's beaches, and the best fish of the trip on the way home.
