The story
The standard trip is an overnight houseboat. Genuinely lovely, and it shows you almost nothing: a barge only goes where barges fit.
The canals are the point
- Dugout canoe and a poler — channels four metres across, palms meeting overhead, water as the road.
- Washing, a cow going somewhere, the school ferry. Nobody performing anything.
- Six to nine in the morning, before the heat, while the water is still glass.
- Half a day is plenty. This is not an endurance activity.
- Negotiate at the smaller jetties, not through the hotel.
- Cash, sun cover, and a willingness to sit still for three hours.
Do both if you can: a night afloat for the sunset and the cooking, a morning in a canoe for everything the barge cannot reach. Time for one? The canoe.
Skip the houseboat. A dugout canoe gets into the narrow channels where the actual village life happens.
